Procedure

The FDA approved regimen 2 for Mifiprex (RU-486) is:

  1. The first medication, Mifeprex, blocks progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone that is necessary for the pregnancy to survive. Without progesterone, the growing embryo dies.
  2. The second medication, Mifipristone, which usually taken 24-48 hours after the first medication, causes cramping, and bleeding expelling the embryo and uterine contents.2
  3. A physical exam is recommended about 7-14 days later to ensure the abortion is complete and that there are no immediate complications.
