Several of our clients are asking about the risks associated with coronavirus or more specifically, COVID-19. Just to explain the two terms – coronavirus isn’t new and refers to a batch of viruses known to cause respiratory symptoms. COVID-19 is the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. Experts in the field refer to this coronavirus as a “novel coronavirus,” because it is a previously unknown coronavirus that is not yet fully understood by health experts.
How does COVID-19 affect pregnancy? The CDC (Center for Disease Control) addresses this concern with regular updates on their website at CDC – pregnancy and COVID 19. The following is a summary of the most recent findings according to the CDC as of May 27th, 2020:
Currently we do not know if pregnant women have a greater chance of contracting COVID-19. Based on available information, pregnant women seem to have the same risk as adults who are not pregnant.
CDC advises, if you are pregnant:
Mother-to-child transmission of coronavirus while pregnant is unlikely, but after birth a newborn then becomes susceptible. A very small number of babies have tested positive for after birth. It is yet unknown if these babies contracted the virus during or after birth. The virus has not been detected in amniotic fluid, breastmilk, or other maternal samples.
The CDC recommends that children under the age of 2 do not wear face masks due to the danger of suffocation.
Parents and other caregivers should wear a cloth face covering in addition to practicing other prevention steps (social distancing, hand washing, disinfecting). A cloth face covering may prevent the virus spreading the virus to others and is especially important if you may be infected but do not yet have symptoms of COVID-19.
Along with your healthcare providers, you decide whether you begin or continue breastfeeding. Limited studies reveal COVID-19 has not been detected in breast milk, however, we cannot confirm that mothers with COVID-19 can spread the virus via breast milk.
If you choose to direct breastfeed you should wear a facemask and wash your hands before each feeding.
If you are going to express breast milk: Wash hands before touching any pump or bottle parts and before expressing breast milk. We suggest the CDC recommendations for proper pump cleaning (Español) after each use. Cleaning all parts that come into contact with breast milk. If possible, ask a well friend or family member to feed the expressed breast milk to your baby.
Depression is common and can be treated during and after pregnancy. Seek treatment if you are experiencing depression, from a health care provider as soon as possible. Find more information at CDC’s site depression during and after pregnancy.
