Miscarriage, Abortion and an Ectopic Pregnancy: What’s the Difference?

Do you have questions about the difference between abortion, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care?
Some people have been worried that women who have miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies might not be able to get the help they need. But it’s important to know that this isn’t true. So what should you know about miscarriage, abortion and ectopic pregnancy?
Let’s talk about it!
What Happened with the Dobbs v. Jackson Case?
Several years ago, a decision at the Supreme Court level, Dobbs v. Jackson, made it so that each state can make its own rules about abortion. This means that in some places, there are now stricter laws. However, the court didn’t say that all abortions are illegal everywhere. And it didn’t say anything about treating miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies.
Clearing Up Confusion:
Even in states with strict rules about abortion, doctors can still take care of women who have miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies. This is especially true in medically necessary cases.
Consequently…….
What is a miscarriage exactly?
A miscarriage is what happens when the pregnancy isn’t viable. Viable means that the fetus has implanted in the proper location (uterus) and has a beating heart.
• It is estimated that as many as 30% of early pregnancies end in miscarriage. If your pregnancy is not viable, it will end by itself in miscarriage.
• Before you make the decision to end a pregnancy, it’s helpful to know if the pregnancy will continue on its own.
• Having an ultrasound before you decide on an abortion procedure or before taking the abortion pill will confirm the viability of the pregnancy.
What do I need to know about an ectopic pregnancy?
• An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that has established itself outside the womb (uterus). This is a medical emergency.
• Taking the Abortion Pill during an ectopic pregnancy can lead to excess bleeding or damage to your fallopian tube. A damaged tube would limit your future ability to get pregnant. (Reference: MayoClinic)
Ultrasounds are required by many states prior to having an abortion procedure or taking the abortion pill.
In Alaska, it is not required, but is recommended. If your state requires an ultrasound, talk to one of our chat-line nurses to find a no-cost
ultrasound in your area.
Doctors know that taking care of these problems is not the same as an abortion. Groups like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have special instructions for doctors to help women with these issues, and it’s all about keeping the women healthy and safe.
This means that doctors can treat miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies the right way, without breaking the law.
Talking Clearly About the Rules:
After the court’s decision, some doctors and women were confused about what’s allowed. That’s why it’s super important for the people who make the laws and the doctors who follow them to talk clearly. This way, women can get the care they need, without worry, regarding the whole journey.
Getting help:
The Dobbs v. Jackson case has led to many discussions, but it’s key to remember that it doesn’t stop women from getting help for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies. The law and doctors both agree that women need to have this kind of care.
